Local Area Network means that all computers are in same building and are at closer distance or in same house.
A building could be anything like same house,high school,college or small business.but then why do you need lan?
A lan connects devices over a shorter distance suppose you need to share a movie or share some data in house or in college which is on server then the other computers can make use of it and can transfer it to own pc.
lan is also typically owned , controlled and managed by single person or organisation .Therefore lan is for only shorter distances.
